The Lord's Prayer

The True Meaning as Taught by Jesus

The Lord’s Prayer, also known as the Our Father, is arguably the most well-known prayer in the world. For centuries, it has been recited in churches, around kitchen tables, and among people in great crises, regardless of their denomination.

They are words that are so commonly known, so universally recognized, so rote and routine that most people have never stopped to consider their meaning, study their context, or ask the most basic questions about it. Where did it come from? Why do we pray it? What does it mean?

Many don’t know the origin or purpose of this divine prayer, but these fifty or so words arranged in eight clauses are profound, purposeful, even provocative; and they are actually an instruction manual from Jesus himself on how to pray to bring about a true change in soul.

Jesus so often taught with stories and parables, using analogies and metaphors to instruct his new followers about the kingdom of God. The Lord’s Prayer is different. It is actually one of the rare instances where Jesus tells us how to do something with perfect clarity.

He first contrasted how we should pray with how hypocrites pray. They do it in public for all to see, babbling on and on, and using many words as they ramble. They draw attention to themselves, not to be heard by God but to be seen by people, and Jesus says the attention they get is their full reward.

Jesus then gives us clear instructions about how we are to pray, and while his lesson is surprisingly simple, there is a lot to unpack. No parables. No stories. No mystery at all. Just a short, simple model of prayer that we can follow to help us live a God realized life.

In this short but enrapturing book, Sage Crystal eloquently encapsulates the true purpose of the Lord’s Prayer, as Jesus taught it. She expounds upon each clause as she illuminates the beautiful words in this  divine prayer. You will come away with a fresh and erudite understanding of how to use the Lord’s Prayer in your daily life as a complete course for the evolution of your soul.
